Plus Size Tummy Tuck
The world is changing! It used to be that patients had to be a certain weight and BMI to have a tummy tuck. That’s how I was taught during my residency training.
Over the last ten years, in my own practice, I have pushed consistently advanced the weight and BMI requirements for my patients while still achieving great tummy tuck results safely.
And the plus size tummy tuck was born!
Currently, I do not have any specific weight or BMI requirements for my tummy tuck and body contouring patients. If I feel we can achieve a great result safely and effectively, we do it.
Yes, optimal weight is optimal. Some patients cannot and some do not want to lose weight. They are simply bothered by the excess fat and loose skin of the abdomen and waist. Through liposuction and the tummy tuck procedure (done at the same time) the plus size tummy tuck addresses the areas of concern. What’s fascinating is that many if not all of the plus size tummy tuck patients end up losing weight after their plus size tummy tuck. Whether its being able to be more active, being more confident, or getting the motivation to change other parts of their life, I have seen the majority of the plus size tummy tuck patients lose additional weight beyond their tummy tuck procedure.
The great news is that the extra weight loss does not result in new loose skin in the abdomen and waist. The plus size tummy tuck tightens the skin sufficiently to allow future weight loss to occur without the return of loose skin.
Here is an example of a recent plus size tummy tuck I performed. The patient also had a breast reduction at the same time and is shown here only one month after surgery. As you can see, a plus size tummy tuck can be done safely and effectively for patients who are not at their optimal weight or BMI.
